In their home-opener for the 2014 season, the UMMCS knew that they were to face a formidable opponent in the WMU Broncos. Nevertheless, all of the Maize and Blue faithful who attended the game were not left disappointed, as the Wolverines played to a 1-0 win over the Broncos.
The game began with the Broncos clearly in the driver's seat and the Wolverines on their heels. However, very shortly after this initial wave of pressure by WMU, Michigan settled into their game plan and took control from there. Opportunities on goal came frequently and if it was not for some spectacular goalkeeping and unlucky bounces, the final score could have been much more one-sided. It was not until late in the first half that a ball whipped into the box by a Michigan wide-midfielder found its way into the back of the WMU goal after bouncing off of several bodies before being deflected to the goal by Michigan junior striker Reid Davison.
A game that saw many changes of possession and hard fought battles meant that the Michigan defence had to be at their best. And, indeed, they were. Beginning from the strikers, to the intensity of the midfielders, supported by the dominant back four, and finally anchored by sophomore goalkeeper, Graham Keep, Michigan demonstrated how good defence is a team effort and were able to protect their one goal lead for the night.
UMMCS thanks all of their fans who came out and asserted their support throughout the game with their cheers, chants, and enthusiasm. The Wolverines next hosts the Central Michigan University Chippewas on Sunday, September 21 at 3:00 pm at Mitchell Field.
