Last Sunday, the Wolverines travelled to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State University. In a battle that would likely determine the leader of the MASC Central division, the Spartans came out just on top with a 1-0 win.
The game was a physical and exciting affair, with opportunities to score coming for both teams. It wasn't until the second half; however, that the deadlock was broken when a Michigan State player fired a shot from just outside the Wolverine's box and into the back of the goal. Michigan responded with a high pressure offense and created many more great chances to tie the game, including one opportunity that found the back of the goal but was called back due to a Michigan player in an offside position.
With this loss, the Wolverines have experienced something that they have avoided for over two years, a regular season conference loss. Nevertheless, Michigan still controls their own destiny as four wins to conclude their season would see the Wolverines going to the MASC regional championship tournament for the second year in a row.
Michigan next faces-off against the Purdue University Boilermakers (Friday, October 10 8:30 pm in South Bend, IN) and the Ferris State University Bulldogs (Sunday, October 12 12:00pm at Mitchell Field).
